A day doesn’t go by that I don’t use a cutting board! And when you’re looking at detoxing your life, I always think you should look at the things you use often. So here are my best nontoxic cutting board options 🙂

Why even use a non-toxic cutting board?

We’re surrounded by plastic. It’s everywhere. Unfortunately, some of the plastic that has been developed can leach into our food and our bodies. A new finding in research around plastic just came out: “The study marks the first time that researchers have established that phthalates cause uterine fibroids.” Stated Motherly magazine this past November 2022. It’s a big deal. Phthalates are found in everything from food, and makeup to, you guessed it: cutting boards. Plastic is often connected to being endocrine disruptors.

Not all plastic cutting boards are terrible, so don’t throw it into the garbage! As with everything, making slow strategic changes to the toxicity in your life, surroundings, and belongings will help improve your health in the long term!

Okay, how many different materials of cutting boards are there? Well in my mind there are really only:

  • Wooden boards
  • Plastic boards
  • Bamboo boards (yes, I did have to google if Bamboo was considered a wood… it’s not. it’s actually considered a type of grass…)
  • Composite boards (made from a combination of materials, such as plastic and bamboo)
  • Glass boards
  • Marble or Granite boards.

Which one do you use in which situation?

I love having three different types of cutting boards in my life 🙂 It gives you the best option for cutting and entertaining, and they often last quite a long time so rarely need to be replaced! I often have multiple sizes of each kind. I want a different one for fruit, onions, and raw meat! There’s nothing worse than an onion-smelling strawberry. Of course the best cutting boards can also be used for your next cheese platter. I guess it could also be a serving board for your healthy foods.

How to care for

They should also be oiled regularly to prevent warping and cracking and to ensure they remain safe for food preparation. Mineral oil is transparent and has no odor or taste, is the best oil to use on your wood boards.

Plastic cutting boards: Plastic cutting boards can be washed with warm soapy water, rinsed well and dried completely. They can also be washed in a dishwasher. Avoid using abrasive cleaning products that can scratch the surface.

Bamboo cutting boards: Bamboo cutting boards should be washed with warm water that’s soapy, rinsed well, and dried completely. They should also be oiled regularly to prevent warping and cracking, and to ensure they remain safe for food preparation.

It’s important to avoid using harsh or abrasive cleaning products, such as bleach, ammonia, or steel wool, as they can damage the surface of the board.

How do you keep your knives sharp?

You sharpen them! Okay, that is not a fair answer. Wood or plastic cutting boards will help keep your knives sharp. Wash the knives by hand. Don’t put them in a drawer. In a drawer they’re more apt to bush up against other metal, which can dull them.

Should you do anything special for the first use of a cutting board?

Each cutting board will have different instructions to maintain its optimal longevity and need proper care. Make sure you read the instructions before using your cutting board. Often with materials like wood, regular maintenance will mean that your favorite cutting boards will last a lifetime!
